Wilson, Stadium post district softball wins

The West Central District fastpitch tournament finally got underway today at Sprinker Recreation fields, after rainouts on Friday and Saturday forced a complete postponement of games.

In first round games this morning, Stadium held off a late Kentwood rally to win, 7-5. Heidi Wells was the winning pitcher with 13 strikeouts.

Wilson defeated Kentridge, 4-1. Janessa Flynn was the winning pitcher and along with Taylor Gomsrud had key hits for the Rams.

Stadium will play Jefferson, which defeated Bellarmine Prep, in the second round game at 2:15 with a guaranteed spot at state going to the winner.

Wilson will play Kentlake at 2:15 in another winner-to-state game.

We’d Welcome Lacrosse, Will WIAA?

On Friday, April 23, the WIAA Rep Assembly will vote on amendments to sanction boys and girls lacrosse.  Odds are it will not; but we hope it will. If not this year, at some point soon.  Around this area, Curtis boasts a very solid team, ranked top in its division with some talented D1 level players. Here is a recent article from the Seattle Times about the sport’s chances of getting the nod the WIAA this year.

The foul air of bad officiating hit critical mass last night during the Bellarmine Prep vs. Moses Lake game. The game was really not pretty.

The Lions won, 65-55, in a game marked by spasms of good basketball but overhwhelmingly effected by officiating that was confusing to say the least. A total of 47 fouls were called, many either wrong or inconsequential and a dozen or so were NOT called that the band  Third Eye Blind could sing anthems about.  If they hadn’t been refereeing a basketball game last night.  The refs admittedly don’t get much love from the coaches, players and fans, but, hey, sometimes they just don’t deserve much. More on this later after we check in with the head of the Washington Officials Association and WIAA.

The newly crowned West Central District champion Lincoln Abes will play Walla Walla in the first round of the state championship tournament Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Tacoma Dome.

Wilson, coming into the tournament with a No. 6 seed will play Lake Washington at 5 p.m. The winners of those two games will meet on Thursday at 7 p.m.
