Derek Jeter overtook Junior Griffey a few days ago among active players with the most hits. Jeter has 2,781 while Griffey has 2,776.
Of course, Griffey, as the world now knows, is resting a lot more than he is playing. (In case you’ve been away, the News Tribune reported that Junior was napping in the clubouse during a recent game).
Now, with the apparent lack of adult supervision in the Mariners clubhouse, with Mike Sweeney leading his insurrection against the News Tribune for reporting a fairly interesting development in Junior’s career arc, we only wish to comment that the News Tribune veteran baseball reporter Larry LaRue, who some of us have known and read since he was in Long Beach covering the Angels in the 1980s, does not make stuff up.
No it’s not the Sounders vs. Red Bulls, even though that should be a good match. The Red Bulls showed some spunk beating Chicago 1-0 last weekend and the Sounders looked good in their opener. The game that you’re going to want to set your DVRs for is Manchester United vs Chelsea. They’ll be airing the game live on ESPN2 at 4:30 a.m. (which is why I recommend the DVR, even though I’ll probably be awake). This is going to be an incredible match with the two teams at the top of the table in the English Premiere League (EPL) matching off. Man U. leads Chelsea by 1 point in the standings; while Chelsea leads Man U. by 2 in the goal differential category (thanks to their 7-1 walloping of Aston Villa last week). One of these teams will probably win the title this year, with Arsenal being a dark horse to overtake both. Take this opportunity to watch what might be the deciding game in this year’s EPL play. I’m hoping Man U. can pull it out, but with Rooney injured and out for 2-4 weeks I’m thinking that Chelsea has the edge.

Being that I’m a NY Yankees fan living in Tacoma, I don’t get to watch a ton of games of my favorite team. My viewing is limited to the occasional Wednesday night game on ESPN or when Fox decides to put the Yankees on their Saturday broadcast. I always prefer the Saturday option because I generally get the combo of Joe Buck and Tim McCarver. As for McCarver, well I could take him or leave him (even though I think he is pretty good). Buck, on the other hand, is one of the best voices in baseball and possibly all sports broadcasting at the moment. So when I saw the headline on that he re-signed for the next 4 years with Fox, I was quite pleased. Here’s hoping this means a lot more Yankee games listing to the dulcet sounds of Joe doing the play by play – and also the Yankees winning.
