Lions Sleep Tonight, But Win

The Bellarmine Lions looked like two teams in last night’s win against Olympia to help keep them in the thick of things in Narrows 4A soccer, after a recent 2-1 loss to South Kitsap and a 3-3 tie with Stadium. The win leaves the Lions with a 5-1-1 record.
“It was important to see how we played against this team (Olympia) because they had been beaten by the two teams ahead of us (Stadium and SK),” coach Joe Waters said before the game.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead on a free kick against a Lions’ squad that seemed sluggish and disorganized.
With about 20 minutes to go, a sense of urgency seemed to kick in and Jessica Christian made several nice forays along the left side deep into the Bears defense and twice delivered beautiful passes from to the front of the net, her teammates narrowly missing conversions of them both times.
Bellarmine switched its setup and brought junior Kelly Beck to midfield from her center back position and the move coincided with a more aggressive attack by the Lions, who scored twice in the last 10 minutes, on a rebound-goal by Stephanie Hamilton and a winning penalty kick by Beck.
Beck, who is returning from a knee injury that kept her out at the beginning of the season said she is returning to form and was excited to have the chance to win the game.
“I didn’t really feel any pressure. It’s just good to be getting back,” she said.
