Curtis, Bellarmine Roll to 6th Straight

Auburn High School came to Curtis in what was arguably the game of the week in the state in 4A high-school football Friday night. The Seattle Times had Curtis ranked No.2 in the state and Auburn, after a loss last week, was No.8.

Here is what happened. Viking quarterback Tyler Jamison hit C.J. Langlow on a 65-yard touchdown pass on the third play of the game that sort of stunned the visitors. Then he threw three more touchdown passes to Rahmel Dockery over the next little while. Dockery did his weekly magic, zigging, zagging, hurdling, and otherwise collecting 368 all-purpose yards. And the game of the week turned into a 41-14 rout. Curtis proudly walked off the field with a 6-0 record and Auburn fell to 4-2.

“We learned we could be very physical,” said Curtis assistant coach Jason Keel.

“We knew Auburn was probably going to be the most physical team we have played, and we probably brought our own physical play up a notch,” Curtis lineman Cornelius Edison agreed.

In other high-school action, Bellarmine Prep, led by two touchdowns each from Scott Comfort and Isaiah Flynn, defeated South Kitsap, 27-3, to remain  undefeated at 6-0.

Mt. Tahoma hammered Shelton, 40-13. Xavier Bazile caught two touchdown passes from DeAndre Baines.

Lions Sleep Tonight, But Win

The Bellarmine Lions looked like two teams in last night’s win against Olympia to help keep them in the thick of things in Narrows 4A soccer, after a recent 2-1 loss to South Kitsap and a 3-3 tie with Stadium. The win leaves the Lions with a 5-1-1 record.

“It was important to see how we played against this team (Olympia) because they had been beaten by the two teams ahead of us (Stadium and SK),” coach Joe Waters said before the game.

The Bears took a 1-0 lead on a free kick against a Lions’ squad that seemed sluggish and disorganized.

With about 20 minutes to go, a sense of urgency seemed to kick in and Jessica Christian made several nice forays along the left side deep into the Bears defense and twice delivered beautiful passes from to the front of the net, her teammates narrowly missing conversions of them both times.

Bellarmine switched its setup and brought junior Kelly Beck to midfield from her center back position and the move coincided with a more aggressive attack by the Lions, who scored twice in the last 10 minutes, on a rebound-goal by Stephanie Hamilton and a winning penalty kick by Beck.

Beck, who is returning from a knee injury that kept her out at the beginning of the season said she is returning to form and was excited to have the chance to win the game.

“I didn’t really feel any pressure. It’s just good to be getting back,” she said.

How to Watch the U.S. Amateur

Chambers Bay golf pro Nyk Pike was good enough to write up a hole-by-hole description of the course for us and Tim Meikle in our production department put together some nice illustrations of the holes, which you can download from Tacoma Weekly.

Grab one of must-have maps of Chambers Bay off the website, print it out and take it out to the course with you for a great way to follow all the action of the 110 U.S. Amateur at Chambers Bay this week.

Rainiers playoff games in Seattle

We admit we don’t have an alternative solution and are not familiar with the construction contract for Cheney Stadium or why the contract was to begin while the season (or postseason)  was likely still going on, but we understand why a lot of Tacoma Rainiers fans we are hearing from are kind of peeved about seeing the PCL playoffs go up to Safeco. Here are the details from the team press release. Read the rest of this entry »

Kyle Stanley’s Short Game

Here is an interesting piece on Kyle Stanley

Jordan Russell has decided to forgo the 2010 high-school football season and focus his athletic ability on basketball. I’ve enjoyed watching Jordan play both sports and will miss the excitement he brought to the Lincoln Abes on the football field. But the decision makes a lot of sense, since Jordan came to the conclusion recently that he was not interested in pursuing college football, but would hope to play basketball in college. See more in my story in Tacoma Weekly.

Mariners fire Wakamatsu; bring up Brown
